Styling Denim Trends for Summer
Styling Denim Trends for Spring and Summer
Denim never goes out of style – it’s a classic wardrobe staple that goes with everything! This season, we are seeing some new denim trends that are a great investment for modernizing your look. Look for bootcut and cropped flare jeans to make a statement this spring, and skinnies are still around, too. Raw edge hems are peeking out on jeans and skirts, and all of the washes are carrying their own weight! Here’s a quick guide to the cuts and washes that are turning heads these days and how to style them!
Cuts
Right now, there are a variety of cuts in jeans, with one for every body shape and style! We are loving to see frayed hems on more than cutoffs!
- Bootcut and flare cut – Bootcut and flare cut jeans are great for apple shapes and hourglasses, really taking advantage of your curves. New this spring, you’ll see them cropped above the ankle, which looks great with flats, heels, wedges, and ankle boots. This cut looks great topped off with a casual blazer.

- Skinny cut – Skinnies are great for tucking into cowboy boots or wearing with a low, flat sandal. Wear these with a sleeveless top for an elongating effect, and layer on a cardigan when the nights get cool.

- Straight cut – The straight cut is the most versatile basic that works the best for most body types. You can wear them with sandals for a laid back casual look with a flowy top, tee, or sweater. For hourglass, apple, and athletic builds, these look great worn with a flowy, dressy blouse, or a casual tee. Pair your straight cut jeans with a blazer and a tucked or cropped shirt underneath for a modern look. Finally, add a belt to your straight leg jeans to create even more polish and definition.

Washes
In addition to the gamut of cuts out this spring, we are seeing all the washes. This provides options for you to get denim that is exactly your style!
- Dark wash – The dark wash is the dressiest of the denim washes, and has a slimming effect. Pear and hourglass shapes look best in a darker wash. It is great for day and nighttime, looks great with lighter colored and patterned tops because they really pop. Remember to wash sparingly (check out our blog on caring for your clothing) to keep that dark denim color lasting.

- Medium wash – The medium wash goes the distance in your wardrobe – it suits most body types and, while a little more casual than a dark wash, it goes with a variety of colors and textures, including tees, flowy tops, and sweaters.

- Light wash – The light wash is great for the apple and athletic figures, and is a great staple for your casual wardrobe. It can look more formal with a blouse or dressy top, and is always great with a dark, solid tee or casual button up.

- White denim – White denim is the ultimate sign that warmer weather has arrived. It is great for spring and summer with a bright top, solid or patterned! For jeans, thicker white denim is most flattering, and a straight leg (see cuts above) will be the most versatile! Grab a white jean jacket to wear with blue jeans and any other pants or skirts you have!

- Denim Jackets – The denim jacket never goes out of style and is one of the most versatile items you can have in your wardrobe. Denim jackets look great with black pants and white jeans, a solid tee or patterned blouse, a skirt and top with sandals or tennis shoes, and with short and long dresses. Keep one on hand to layer with almost any outfit.
