Help! I’m in a Fashion Rut!
Help, I’m in A Fashion Rut!
Feeling like you are in a fashion rut? Do you stare at the clothes in your closet before getting dressed, feeling uninspired? Or maybe you default to your standard “uniform” because it is easier than finding something different to wear. This feeling is common and can be solved without buying a whole new wardrobe or dramatically changing your look. Consider these ideas for jump starting your excitement for getting dressed:
- Purge your closet. You may have too much in your closet to navigate. Take a look and set anything you have not worn in a year to the side. Be sure to include items you put on when getting dressed, but take off and don’t end up wearing out of the house! Getting rid of the items you don’t wear gives you a clearer picture of your true, wearable wardrobe. Bonus: Once you have decided you can live without these clothes that are no longer serving you, donate that pile and feel the joy of focusing on items you really love, and giving donated items a second chance with someone else. Once cleaned out, consider organizing your closet by category and by color. Group tops, sweaters, and jackets in sections and then by color, and do the same with pants and jeans. This can make it easier to find what you are looking for on busy mornings, so you step out looking great, on time!
- Try a new color in your wardrobe. Now that you’ve organized your closet by color, you can see what colors you have enough of (or are overloaded with!), and which ones you may want to explore. If you have a ton of neutral colored clothes (black, browns, taupe, white), consider incorporating a coordinating color or pattern. Be sure to stick to tones that compliment your natural coloring and that you love – if you add something totally out of your comfort zone, you may not end up wearing it at all.
- Fill in gaps. Maybe you have invested in jeans or pants that would shine with some coordinating tops. If the range of colors in yourcurated closet is even, look at a layering piece that can invigorate your existing pieces, like a kimono (pictured), cardigan, or jacket. Maybe you have patterns all over the place – look for solid pants, new denim or solid shorts, or a new solid skirt that would multiply the times you can wear those patterns.
- Replenish your basics. Okay, we just told you to purge and now we are asking you to take a second look at basics! Often, wardrobes suffer from a lack of coordinating basics to boost the statement pieces we really want to wear. Basics of a wardrobe should include blue jeans, black pants, white tees (short and long sleeved), a black tee, a denim jacket, a white or chambray button down shirt, and a solid cardigan sweater for layering. Throw in our popular soft leggings with side pockets or our basic reversible tank top to round out your closet.
- Update your shoes and accessories. Having the right footwear and polishing an outfit with accessories can breathe new life into your wardrobe staples without breaking the bank. Move from boots to sandals to get a springtime look with your favorite outfits. Add a new bracelet and roll your cuffs so you and everyone else can see it on your wrist throughout the day. Layer necklaces to create dimension at your neckline. Finish your outfit off with a belt to define your beautiful figure. Add a crossbody bag or a colorful tote to your outfit to polish it and make you feel great!
