Caring For Your Clothing: 5 Easy (and Eco-Friendly) Tips & Tools!
At MMB, we believe in having quality clothes that not only remain timeless in style, but also stand the test of time. We curate collections of clothing from various brands that use high quality fabrics that look amazing, feel comfortable, and are durable to frequent wears and washings. But, how you care for your clothes at home is also equally important in ensuring they will last. I like to think of it like getting your hair colored…You can spend tons of $$$ on a gorgeous color and treatment, but if you use low quality products at home and don’t appropriately maintain it, that color is going to fade fast and your hair isn’t going to feel as healthy. But don’t worry! We have some easy (& eco-friendly) tips and tricks up our sleeves that we love to use for keeping our clothes looking and feeling brand new.
Use Mesh Laundry Bags to Protect Your Clothes
Using a mesh laundry bag for your delicate clothing is an easy way to protect them while washing. How many times have you pulled a gorgeous new top from the wash, only to find that it snagged from the washing machine–so frustrating! Well worry no more, because simply placing those thinner tops, knit sweaters, lacy numbers, or delicate bras & undies in a reusable mesh laundry bag can easily prevent any snags. Plus, these bags help to reduce annoying pilling in clothes too since they prevent clothes from rubbing against each other in the wash. Lastly, these little wonder bags also can help garments keep their shape. No more stretched out and loose knits or misshapen bras! This set of 5 bags is perfect since you can use multiple bags in each load. And, the various shapes make it easy to protect everything from bulky sweaters to dainty lace bralettes.
Sheep Dryer Balls | Laundry Scenting Spray
Swap Dryer Sheets for Reusable Wool Dryer Balls
Ditch the waste and funky chemicals of traditional dryer sheets but making the switch to a reusable, natural wool dryer ball. These little sheep cuties are not only adorable to look at, but perfect for keeping your clothes wrinkle & static free. Throw in 2-3 balls with a normal load of laundry to ensure that your clothes come out fluffy, soft, and winkle free. Plus, they last for hundreds of uses–which is great for the environment and your wallet. If you like adding a little scent to your laundry in the dryer, we also recommend pairing it with this natural laundry scenting spray which is specially designed to work with these dryer balls to lightly scent your clothes and keep them super fresh. We love that this spray allows you to control how much scent you want to add and because it’s formulated with natural ingredients, like essential oils and witch hazel, it’s free from the harsh chemicals in most laundry products. Not only is this great for your clothes, but it’s also great for your skin & the environment. And, we love that they are a safe option to use for your little one’s clothes too! These cuties are a must for any household. Plus, they just make doing laundry a little more cheerful too!
Go Waste-Free w/ This Lint Roller
This one is a necessity for all the fur mamas out there! Are your black pants always ending up covered in dog or cat hair? Well, no more worries about that with this magical little paper free lint roller! That’s right–paperless! No waste & no running out right before heading out for work. Inside of having the hair cling to sticky (and annoying) paper, it swipes hair off of your clothes and into the inside of the roller. Then, just simply empty it. So easy! And it will last forever. We recommend grabbing one for your closet and an extra for your purse for on-the-go use. It’s great to travel with–no more sticking to your belongings!
Use the Towel Drying Hack For Knitwear
Putting knitwear in the dryer is always risky since they are more prone to shrinking, snagging, and piling in there–not great for keeping them looking new. But, hanging your knits to dry can often cause them to become stretched out and misshapen. So, our fave hack for protecting your sweaters while drying is to use a bath towel! To use this easy method, just lay a bath towel out flat, place your sweater flat on top of the towel, right when you take it out of the wash. Reshape your sweater if needed, then roll up the towel with your sweater inside and lightly press as you do this. This helps to gently soak up the moisture from washing, while keeping your sweater’s shape. Let it dry overnight, then unroll and wear! No stretching out or shrinking, plus no heat needed for this energy saving method! You can also use this method for delicate dresses or tops that might also be prone to misshaping in the dryer or on the drying rack.
Limit Washing Your Jeans
Lastly, we always recommend to limit washing your denim to only one wash per 5 or so wears. Jeans really don’t need to be washed after every wear like tops do. Plus, over washing can actually weaken the denim fibers making them more prone to rips, tears, and sagging. So, the secret to making your denim last years and years and still feel new is to actually care for them less! Rotating your denim can help make it last too. Wait a few days between wears of each jean, just hang it up in your closet after wearing and give it time to reshape and relax. You can also use the laundry scenting spray mentioned earlier to freshen them up a bit if you like! But, avoid anything too harsh, like chemical based room/linen sprays, as they can also weaken the fiber’s integrity over time. After a few wears, wash them on cold with a gentle detergent and hang them to dry. Keeping them out of the dryer will also make your denim last much longer!
